DIY Garden Ornaments

29 May

The other day I was thinking about my garden, and I was thinking how much I love when gardens are full of bright blooms and are really colourful. The problem is that it’s impossible to have your garden always being pretty and bright because, well, everything blooms at different times, and if one thing in your garden is in bloom it probably won’t last for long and it possibly won’t be at the same time as something else. That is, of course, unless you’re extremely clever and dedicated, which I’m not. I love my garden, but I pretty much half-ass it. But I also want it to be pretty all the time, because a pretty house is a happy house.

The next part of this thought process is, well, what can I do to dress up my garden. The colour of our door and the big pot we have at the front are orange, so I’m sort of going with an orange theme. But at the same time I have a couple of bright blue lanterns (they were candle lanterns until I ripped the tops off of some solar lights and hung the tops with some wire on the inside, now they’re solar lantern – BAM) anyways with that in mind I started to think. I can’t build things out of wood because I don’t know how. I can’t build anything out of glass, and the idea of spray painting old garden ornaments is in the plans, but I have to find something cool to spray paint first.

What I CAN easily make something out of is FIMO! It’s so easy! I made some plant markers a couple of years ago so I know that they can survive outside, even throughout the winter. The DIY Fimo garden ornaments are inspired by fuchsia which is one of my favourite flowers because they’re so bright and extravagant.

Step 1. Supplies

Buy Fimo or other brand of oven-bake sculpting clay, I used three different kinds to get the colours I wanted and they all worked the same. I bought a bright blue to match my makeshift lanterns, a lighter blue to coordinate with it (and not clash with the orange pot) and a really bright tomato red to stand out against the blue. The total cost was about $24 because the clay was not on sale. :( I also used scissors, wax paper, small bowels, wooden balls, and twine.

Step 2. Smush the clay

into balls and then flatten them until they’re about 1/4″ thick. The amount of clay will dictate the size of the “flower”. Using a butter knife trace the shape of the flower into the clay. Cut away the excess.

Step 3. Smooth the edges

After the clay is cut the edges are going to be all crummy looking and sharp, smooth them out with your fingers.

4. Poke holes into the flowers

I used a straw!

5. Put clay onto bowls

And mold them onto the bowls. Smooth out any indents you’ve made in the process. This will keep the clay from flattening when you bake them. Make sure the bowls are okay to go in the oven.

6. Roll out some balls for the end of the “flower”

Roll ‘em, poke holes through ‘em. I used a BBQ skewer to poke the holes. I made 3 for each flower in 3 different sizes.

7. Bake

Put all your clay onto a wax paper lined cookie sheet and bake according to the package instructions. PS this stuff really smells when it bakes, make sure not to do this before a meal.

8. String them

Once the clay has cooled after baking it you can start to string the flowers. I used a hemp-like twine. I have shepard hooks out front I intended on hanging them on, so I made a simple loop to hook them on with.

9. add the wooden balls and tie a knot

So that the layers of the flowers don’t move.

10. Done!

Once you’ve added a ball for each layer you can string the last three balls at the bottom and tie a knot. It’ll look something like this when you’re done:

DIY Valentines with a Free Printable Template

3 Feb

Good day!

Last year I made some DIY Valentine’s cards with a printable template that included a space to put a sucker. You can view it here. This year I decided to make things a little more fancy (aka complicated). The valentines are pretty easy to make and aren’t going to cost a lot to make. The best part is you don’t have to make the awkward decisions of who out of your friends/coworkers get the slightly stalkerish valentines in the pack (you know what I’m talking about).

Here’s what you’ll need:

- A computer
- A printer with ink (am I the only one who is always running out of ink? I swear the cartridges print like 4 sheets)
- Light coloured cardstock
- Cutting mat
- X-acto knife or box cutter (make sure it’s sharp)
- Metal ruler
- Stapler
- Washi tape (coloured tape, can be bought at craft supply stores)
- Small candies (I used cinnamon hearts, not my favourite, but they’re cute)
- 2″ square ziploc bags (can be found in craft supply stores or at your local drug-dealers hideout)
- Friends

1. First thing you’ll need to do is download the PDF template here: DIY_valentine_2013_kristenlourie The PDF template is openable in Acrobat Reader, which is free to download if you don’t have it.

2. Load your light coloured cardstock into your printer.

3. Print the PDF. When in the print menu change the paper to “cardstock” if your printer has that setting, I had to use “Other specialty paper” since mine didn’t. Make the print quality as high as you can. Make sure the print settings aren’t on “Shrink to fit paper size” you want to print the template at 100% or all the measurements will be off.

4. Line up your ruler with the dotted lines and score the paper on your cutting mat. (The non-dotted lines are the cut lines). To score the paper use the other side (non-sharp side) of your box cutter. Press lightly enough that you can see a line, but not so hard that it’s very indented, it’s a fine line between not helping you fold and cutting through the paper.

5. Cut the Valentine’s on the cut lines (these are the non-dotted lines). Make sure your knife is sharp and be careful. Make sure you’re using your cutting mat or you’re going to destroy your furniture.

Respect the box cutter and all it's sharpness.

6. Write the names of your friends/coworkers/boyfriend/girlfriend/sister wives/celebrity crushes on the “to” line. Put your name on the “from” line. A variation to this is putting someone elses name and seeing the hilarious confusion that ensues.

7. Fold the paper where you scored it.

8. Get your tiny plastic bag and bag of candies ready. Pour cinnamon hearts (or other candy) into ziploc bag. The less you handle the candies the more appreciative your friends will be.

9. Line up your tiny bag with the inside of the front of your paper Valentine. Staple the bag to the front of the package. Make the folded part of the staple on the inside of the Valentine so it doesn’t look crappy.

10. Fold the little flap over the staple. Tape the flap.

Thank you to Sad Monkey Design who I downloaded the watercolour texture from. Normally I make my own, but I decided the less I have to make my ghetto computer to do the better.

Back from France!

11 Nov

Bonjour!… is about all I know in French. France was fun! aside from the cold rain and getting sick while there. I ate a lifetime’s worth of bread and cheese and got to experience what a big family celebration is over there. A good time was had by all.

Now that I’m back I feel like my work is cut out for me. All the things I’ve been sort of putting off I no longer have an excuse to put off. Such as trying to organize/clean the basement bedroom, possible trying to make it into a useable space (probably going to take at least 2 weekends to get to that point, not including flooring.) there’s also all those other little organizing tasks that you could spend every waking moment trying to complete and probably never seen the end of (boxes and boxes and boxes of shoes for example). I AM excited for the opening of Ikea which will be happening the day before my birthday (Happy Birthday to me!) so it would be nice to get a bunch of stuff like curtains and a new bedspread and bookshelf and crap like that. I guess ’tis the season to get your shit together. Or maybe not? Christmas is sneaking up slowly, isn’t it. Usually nothing gets done then. I also had dreams of designing/printing a calendar, I’m sort of thinking having the time to do that is not on the agenda. Saving up for a new computer is on there. Designing/printing some cards was on there, too. And painting that painting for my brother and his wife. Oh, and making more bath soak….

One thing I did get done is finally updating my timeline pic for my art page! Check it:

Doing anything on my computer reminds me of how badly I need a new computer. Sweet god, opening two programs takes like 5 minutes, it’s horrible. On the bright side I bet I could sell it to a museum soon as an artifact.

Anyways, speaking of Birthdays it’s Leonardo Dicaprio’s birthday!!! Yay for him. I hope he’s somewhere eating cake in a nice suit. He probably is. Buzzfeed is celebrating by posting about his hair. I’m going celebrate by posting this photo of his face. sigh.

Hmm and what else is going on. It snowed like a foot yesterday, so that kind of sucked.

That’s all I can think of at the moment, next post will be a selection of items y’all can buy me for my birthday (November 29, mark that in your day planners).

Adios Amigos and they say in Paris!

Free DIY valentine’s print template

12 Feb

Happy Saturday! I had a few minutes this afternoon and thought it would be cool to put together some free DIY valentines for people to print out. They’re pretty simple, don’t use a lot of ink, and are pretty platonic so they would be nice to take to work. What you will require: suckers, a printer that prints colour, 8.5″x11″ cardstock (I used a cream coloured stock), a metal ruler, cutting mat, and a box cutter or xacto knife.

Step 1: Print out templates, there’s a front and a back

Step 2: Use ruler and box cutter to cut out valentines by lining up your metal ruler with the crop marks on the print out

Step 3: Cut on slit lines indicated on the print out

Step 4: Put sucker stick through slits. I liked the sucker in the back so you could still see the design on the front

Step 4: Bask in the awesomeness of how easy that was

Here are the free templates:

A finely crafted sale – featuring moi

19 Oct

I found out last week that I’ve been accepted to be in A finely Crafted Sale taking place December 4 from 6pm-10pm at the Park theatre. I’m really excited as it will be my first craft sale! The event is normally under the name “This ain’t your grandmas craft sale” or something along those lines, but the name has changed. It promises to have lots of exciting and talented crafters based in and around Winnipeg. If you haven’t been to a craft sale like this before I suggest you get on it, my good friend was in one a couple of summers ago and there’s lots of cool and or hip crafts happening there. I’ll be selling my Milly Pom candles, some of my wool bead necklaces,  sugar skulls, and whatever else I can put together before then. Like I said I’m very excited and will be sharing some photos of new items as I make them. I won’t be showing all of them because that would ruin the suprise. BE THERE. Good bye for now!

DIY Terrarium

24 Sep

I was looking through Real Simple magazine on the weekend and saw an image of a really beautiful room and what made it especially nice was a terrarium:

It mentioned a how to link on a blog and I thought, okay that’s really cool, and apparently it’s not as hard as you’d think it might be. So then I became obsessed with the idea of having a terrarium.

My sister and I went to a few greenhouses that day to check out some bulbs and trees and what not and I ended up buying some plants and a glass vase and some stones and I made one! So far nothing has died and it looks pretty cool. Here’s how I did it:

Here’s what you need: plants, dirt, glass vase, stones for drainage, and activated charcoal so it doesn’t get stanky. Also a note, buy less plants then you think you’ll need. I had too many. They take up more space then you think they will.

1. Put some rocks in there.

2. Activated charcoal, what what! (you can buy this at a pet supply store)

3. Dirt!

4. Plants! Try not to mangle them as much as I did.

5. Sit back and enjoy the plantyness.
